Best Restaurants in Kona: A Local’s Guide to Big Island Dining

Searching for the best restaurants in Kona for your Hawaii vacation? You’ve come to the right place!

After years of calling the Big Island home, I developed a ritual that revolved around food. Every week meant another hidden breakfast counter, another poke spot tucked into a strip mall, another auntie-run kitchen serving plate lunches the way they’ve been made for decades.

Kona may be famous for resorts and postcard sunsets, but the real magic of the west side lives in its local restaurants, roadside cafes, mom-and-pop delis, and old-school diners.

Best Restaurants in Kona, Hawaii

This is not a list built for tourists chasing flashy oceanfront menus and overpriced frozen cocktails.

This is the ultimate local’s guide to the best restaurants in Kona — the places locals actually return to again and again. Some are humble. Some are legendary. All of them are worth your appetite.

1. Teshima’s Restaurant

If I could only eat at one place on the Big Island for the rest of my life, it might honestly be Teshima’s. This old-school Japanese diner in Honalo feels frozen in time in the best possible way. The service is warm, the portions are huge, and the food tastes exactly like Hawaii comfort food should.

They’re famous for their breakfast plates, especially the scrambled eggs with Portuguese sausage, grilled fish, and miso soup combinations. The noodles, fried rice, and teishoku sets are equally beloved. Nothing here is trendy — and that’s exactly why it’s perfect.

2. Kaaloa’s Super J’s

Technically in Captain Cook, Super J’s was my second favorite place to eat on the island and the restaurant I brought every single visitor to without fail. It’s one of the most authentic Hawaiian food experiences you can still have on the Big Island.

The laulau here is legendary: smoky pork wrapped in taro leaves and steamed until impossibly tender. Their squid luau, lomi salmon, and haupia complete one of the best Hawaiian plates anywhere in the state. Tiny, family-run, and unforgettable.

3. Pau Hana Poke

For my money, Pau Hana Poke serves the best poke on the west side of the island. It’s fresh, simple, and focused on quality fish instead of overloaded sauces.

The shoyu ahi and spicy ahi are standouts, but honestly, almost everything behind the counter is worth trying. Grab a poke bowl and head to the beach before sunset — that’s Kona at its best.

4. You Make The Roll

This casual sushi counter became one of my favorite quick lunch stops in Kona. You Make The Roll specializes in oversized custom sushi rolls with local flavors and surprisingly fresh fish.

Locals love the creative combinations, spicy tuna rolls, and grab-and-go convenience. It’s not traditional sushi — it’s pure Hawaii-style casual comfort food.

Also check out Sakura Sushi for creative rolls (Volcano roll is a must) and tempura ice cream.

Seiji’s is where sushi becomes an event. Quiet, intimate, and deeply respected by locals, it’s one of the best Japanese restaurants on the Big Island.

Final Thoughts on the Best Restaurants in Kona

The longer I’m away from the Big Island, the harder it becomes to explain what exactly I miss most about it.

Maybe it’s the people who greet you like family after only a couple visits; maybe it’s the landscapes that somehow still don’t look real even after years of living there; maybe it’s the aloha spirit that slows your heartbeat the second you land.

Or maybe it’s the food.

The smoky laulau at Super J’s. Sunrise breakfasts at Teshima’s. Poke eaten barefoot near the ocean. Lilikoi cheesecake overlooking the cliffs at The Coffee Shack. The kind of meals tied so deeply to memories that one bite can transport you back instantly.

Kona changes constantly, but these places still hold onto the heart of old Hawaii. Skip the tourist traps, follow the locals, and eat your way through the west side one plate lunch, poke bowl, and sunset cocktail at a time.
