Royal Hawaiian Hotel Review: A Love Letter to The Pink Palace

As someone who is borderline obsessed with great hotels, I can confidently say that staying at the Royal Hawaiian was one of those rare experiences that actually lived up to the fantasy in my head.
Some hotels are beautiful; some hotels are historic; some hotels have a great location. But the Royal Hawaiian somehow manages to feel iconic in a way very few hotels in the world still do.

This is not just another luxury resort in Hawaii. This is the Pink Palace. The grand dame of Waikiki. The hotel you see glowing pink against the beach at sunset and instantly think: “That’s where I want to stay.”
And after finally staying there myself, I completely understand the obsession.

An Ocean View Upgrade That Made My Stay
One of the highlights of my stay was getting upgraded to an ocean view room through my American Express benefits, and honestly, it transformed the entire experience. Waking up to Waikiki Beach glowing outside my window every morning felt surreal.
The turquoise water, Diamond Head in the distance, surfers already out before breakfast — it was exactly the dreamy Hawaii fantasy I wanted.
If you stay here, I strongly recommend requesting a room in the newer tower section rather than the original historic wing.
The historic building is stunning architecturally and full of old Hawaii charm, but rumor has it the original rooms were designed during the era when guests arrived by ship, before commercial air travel existed.
Supposedly, the windows were intentionally kept smaller because travelers had already spent days staring at the ocean and didn’t necessarily want giant panoramic water views anymore.
Which is honestly hilarious to think about now. Meanwhile, I absolutely wanted giant panoramic ocean views, and the newer section delivered exactly that.

The Pink Details Are What Makes It Magical
What I loved most about the Royal Hawaiian is that the hotel fully commits to its identity in a way that feels charming instead of gimmicky.
Everything is pink. The walls are pink. The umbrellas are pink. The hallways glow blush at sunset. Even the croissants in the lobby café are pink. And somehow it never feels cheesy.
Instead, the whole property feels romantic, nostalgic, glamorous, and unapologetically joyful. It captures this old-school fantasy version of Hawaii that almost doesn’t exist anymore.
Walking through the hotel honestly felt like stepping into another era of travel — back when vacations felt elegant and ceremonial instead of rushed and transactional.

Sunset Mai Tais – Pure Hawaii
A Royal Hawaiian Hotel review wouldn’t be complete without a mention of it’s storied beach bar.
I already knew the Mai Tai Bar was famous before I arrived, but sitting there in person at sunset completely exceeded my expectations.
There are few places in Waikiki more beautiful than this setup: toes almost in the sand, Diamond Head glowing in the distance, live Hawaiian music playing softly, and a cold mai tai arriving just as the sky turns pink and orange around the hotel itself.
It sounds almost too cinematic to be real, but that’s exactly what makes the Royal Hawaiian special.
The sunset mai tai experience became one of my favorite memories from Hawaii. I could have sat there for hours watching the light change over the ocean while the entire hotel slowly glowed deeper shades of pink around me.
As touristy as it may sound, this is one of those experiences that genuinely deserves the hype.

Breakfast at the Royal Hawaiian
Breakfast at the hotel felt equally dreamy, especially outdoors near the beach before Waikiki fully wakes up for the day.
There is something incredibly peaceful about having coffee while looking out at the ocean from one of the most famous hotels in Hawaii. The atmosphere in the mornings felt softer and quieter than the lively sunset energy later in the day.
And yes, I absolutely loved the pink pastries and croissants from the lobby café. Little touches like that are exactly why this hotel stays memorable long after checkout.

One of the World’s Great Bucket List Hotels
I stay in hotels constantly, and I genuinely think the Royal Hawaiian belongs on the list of the world’s great bucket list properties.
Not because it is the newest, not because it is the flashiest, not because it has the most over-the-top luxury amenities. But because it has soul.
The Royal Hawaiian feels deeply connected to the history of Hawaii tourism in a way very few resorts still manage to preserve.
It feels glamorous without being cold, iconic without feeling corporate, and luxurious without losing its personality.
You are not just staying somewhere nice — you are participating in a piece of Waikiki history. And somehow, despite nearly a century of existence, the Pink Lady still feels timeless.

Royal Hawaiian Hotel Review – Final Thoughts
If you are searching for a modern ultra-minimal luxury hotel experience, this may not be your place.
But if you love classic hotels with personality, history, romance, and one of the best beachfront locations in Hawaii, the Royal Hawaiian is unforgettable.
For me, this was not just a hotel stay. It felt like a love letter to old Hawaii.
And long after leaving Waikiki, I still catch myself thinking about those pink sunsets, ocean view mornings, and mai tais by the beach.
