The Rise of Vegan Dining in Tokyo

This bustling metropolis known for its vibrant culture and exquisite cuisine is undergoing a remarkable transformation in its food scene. Over the past decade, vegan dining in the city has evolved from a niche interest into a mainstream phenomenon, reflecting a growing awareness of health, sustainability, and ethical eating.

A Shift in Perception

Historically, Japan’s culinary landscape has been dominated by fish and meat, with vegetarian options often limited to simple tofu dishes or vegetable tempura. However, as global awareness of veganism has increased, so too has the interest in plant-based diets among Tokyoites. The past decade has seen a surge in vegan restaurants, cafés, and grocery stores catering to those seeking healthier, sustainable food choices.

No guide to Vegan Tokyo would be complete without mentioning the plethora of vegan options available at 7-Eleven and Family Mart. Both chains offer a variety of tasty plant based snacks. Here are some popular options to look out for:

  • Onigiri (Rice Balls): Look for vegan varieties, often filled with ingredients like pickled plum (umeboshi) or seaweed.
  • Sushi Rolls: look for the usual suspects like avocado and cucumber. If you want to venture outside of your culinary comfort zone opt for natto aka fermented soy beans.

  • Salad Packs: Many include tofu, seaweed or edamame, along with sliced cucumber and other fresh vegetables.
  • Fruit Sandwiches: yes you read that right. One of the weird but wonderful snacks in Japan are sandwiches made with fresh fruit like peach, strawberry or kiwi. Check ingredients as some of them are made with non vegan ingredients like whipped cream, cream cheese etc.
  • Sweet Potato: You’ll be surprised just how much Japanese people love sweet potatoes in various forms, including cold roasted potatoes available as an on-the-go snack, and even in sandwiches.
  • Nuts and Dried Fruits: A good selection of unsalted nuts and dried fruits like local mango and jackfruit for a quick energy boost.
  • Vegan Sweets: Options like mochi (rice cakes) and some types of fruit bars are often vegan-friendly. As always check ingredients. We recommend scanning the label with your Google Translate app.
