A Dumpling Pilgrimage: Visiting the Original Din Tai Fung in Taiwan
Wondering what it’s like to visit the original Din Tai Fung location in Taiwan? Read on!
A short layover in Taipei doesn’t leave much room for adventure — just a few precious hours before the next boarding call. But instead of wasting them on airport lounges and lattes, I set out on a culinary pilgrimage to the birthplace of Din Tai Fung, the iconic dumpling house that launched the xiao long bao into global fame.

Chasing Dumplings on Borrowed Time
With only a small window of freedom, I headed straight for the original Din Tai Fung shop on Xinyi Road. This was where it all began back in the 1970s, when Yang Bingyi and his wife transformed their struggling oil shop into a dumpling kitchen.
Today, their brand spans the world — from Los Angeles to Sydney — but this little storefront in Taipei is the sacred ground where it all started.

I was bracing myself for a long wait. Stories of hour-long queues are practically part of the Din Tai Fung experience. But to my shock (and relief), when I arrived there was no line at all. No waitlist, no crowds spilling onto the sidewalk. Just the understated storefront and a tiny window for take-out orders.
It felt almost surreal — as if the dumpling gods knew I was racing the clock and decided to grant me a little miracle.

Takeout Treasures
This original location operates differently from the glitzy branches I’d visited abroad. There are no plush booths, no extensive menu, no table service. It’s takeout only, which somehow made it even more special — stripped down to the essentials, just dumplings and history.
I ordered a box of their famous xiao long bao and stepped aside, watching through the glass as the chefs worked. Even here, in this tiny shop, the artistry was the same: dough being rolled and weighed, pleats folded with machine-like precision, baskets steaming in rhythmic cycles.

When my order was ready, I carefully opened the container right there on the street. The dumplings glistened like little jewels, delicate and translucent, each one holding its secret burst of broth. I popped the first into my spoon, punctured it gently, and let the fragrant steam rise before tasting that familiar, deeply comforting flavor.
It was everything I had hoped for — and somehow, even better knowing I was eating them at the source.

The Original Din Tai Fung – A Taste Worth the Detour
My time in Taipei was fleeting, but that short detour to Din Tai Fung turned a layover into a memory I’ll carry for years. There was something magical about standing on a random street in Taipei, eating world-famous dumplings from a takeout box. Right where the story began.

Sometimes the best meals aren’t the fanciest or most elaborate. They’re the ones that remind you how far something simple, made with care, can travel.
From a tiny oil shop to a global phenomenon, from Taipei to my spoon in a rushed layover, Din Tai Fung’s xiao long bao still feel like little miracles.
