The LA Breakfast Burrito – A Brief History
The breakfast burrito has its roots in Mexican-American cuisine, blending traditional Mexican ingredients with American breakfast staples. While burritos themselves have been a staple in Tex-Mex cuisine for close to a century, the breakfast burrito as we know it today began gaining popularity in the 1970s and 1980s in Southern California.

Los Angeles, with its large Mexican-American population, became a key city in the evolution of the breakfast burrito. The dish typically includes eggs, bacon or sausage, potatoes, cheese, and salsa, all wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.
It is believed that the breakfast burrito was first popularized in LA by Mexican-American food vendors who adapted burritos to cater to the American appetite for breakfast foods.

As the city’s food scene evolved, so did the breakfast burrito, with various regional variations emerging. Its popularity expanded beyond LA to other parts of the US, and it remains a beloved staple on breakfast menus, especially in California, Arizona and Texas.

The breakfast burrito exemplifies the fusion of cultures that defines much of the food scene in Los Angeles. It’s a well known fact that the City of Angels also caters to a disproportionately high number of vegetarians. The breakfast burrito offering has evolved accordingly.

Without further ado, we bring you the best veggie breakfast burritos in Los Angeles, in no particular order:

For over four decades, they have been serving hearty and delicious breakfast burritos to locals and visitors alike, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere where community gathers and memories are made. With no fewer than 14 different breakfast burritos on the menu, vegetarians are bound to find something satisfying. Indeed, the potato, egg and cheese burrito is extremely comforting in its simplicity. Pro move is to add avocado. Little Fatty’s may be known for one of the most exciting happy hours in town. But if you had one too many midori sours or green tea juleps at this Taiwanese Mar Vista gem, come back in the morning and head around the corner to one of LA’s best kept secrets – Fatty Mart. Their veggie breakfast burrito is bound to cure the toughest hangover.

The wrap is loaded with sautéed bell peppers, tater tots and scrambled eggs, all rolled up with a perfectly griddle-crisped tortilla. It’s simple but incredibly flavorful, and the inclusion of a touch of spicy sauce gives it that extra kick. Pro tip: ask for sriracha as well as the green salsa.

Their on site mart has some of the most exciting wine selection on the West Side, and the all the kimchi you may need but don’t feel like going to the nearby Mitsuwa. Come back on a weekend and brunch on kimchi fried rice and congee aka Taiwanese rice porridge.

3. Saby’s Café, Venice
Don’t be fooled by the long lines to Blueys across the street. Saby’s is where it’s at. This is a small LA Latino-owned family-run business at its finest. Yes, it checks off all the buzzwords and it does it with grace, humility and great flavors to match. Known for its laid-back Venice vibes, Saby’s Café menu is in fact inspired by the cuisine of the bustling Mexico City.

Expect creative interpretations of the classic veggie breakfast burrito such as the Oaxacan with quesillo. The combination of crispy potatoes, Oaxacan cheese, soyrizo, eggs, black beans and a light touch of house salsa is one of the most satisfying meat free options in LA. There are several more that can be made veggie-friendly. Try the chilaquiles burrito, just skip the carnitas. We also love the Mexican with soyrizo and jalapeño. Coffee is great, too.

Located by the marina, The Hive is a much loved neighborhood organic cafe that does not disappoint with their breakfast burrito. Ask for Donnie’s Breakfast Burrito without bacon. Packed with mushroom carnitas, oaxaca cheese, fluffy eggs and sriracha aioli, it’s likely the most elevated burrito on the list. The addition of chef Angel’s smokey roasted tomato salsa, made lovingly in-house using a family recipe, takes the burrito to new heights.

The Hive was born of a chance encounter of founders Richard Peters and Constantine Savvides at a silent Vipassana meditation retreat. They wanted the insights they had gained meditating to permeate the business. The result is focus on healthy, unprocessed foods.

They optimize for protein and balancing the macronutrients. Everything is made from scratch and fresh to order. The Hive is the go-to place to get a fulfilling, nutritious, and tasty meal fast.

At the same time the portions are massive and the prices more than reasonable. Quality and quantity, hand in hand – a rarity in LA today!

A neighborhood favorite in Westchester, Benny’s Tacos serves a simple yet fulfilling veggie breakfast burrito. It’s the perfect balance of scrambled eggs, tater tots, beans and a little melted Jack cheese, all wrapped up in a flour tortilla. The trick is to skip the bacon and add avo instead. 10. Guisados, Boyle Heights, Venice & More
Last but certainly not least, the list of best veggie breakfast burritos in LA simply wouldn’t be complete without Guisados. If you haven’t heard of them you’ve likely been living under a foodie rock. Praised by everyone from Anthony Bourdain to Jonathan Gold, Guisados garnered their fame with meaty tacos and handmade corn tortillas. But their vegetarian-friendly breakfast burritos are just as exceptional.

Small but mighty, they surely make up for the petite size with the quality of ingredients. At $7.50 they are the best value burritos in town. Why not order two? May as well, as both their Mexicana and Papas veggie breakfast burritos are worth trying. Their homemade salsas take this burrito to the next level, adding just the right amount of heat.

With no fewer than 10 locations throughout LA, we’re partial to the OG Boyle Heights shop as well as the beach adjacent Venice location (best burritos and tacos in Venice, bar none). Be sure to wash it down with their addictive horchata cold brew. And be there by noon – all locations have a breakfast cut off time.
