Secreto Bar Santa Fe: Home of the Best Margarita in the Southwest

There are good cocktails, great cocktails—and then there are the ones you think about long after the trip ends.

The smoked sage margarita at Secreto Bar might just be one of the best in the Southwest. Bold claim, I know. But hear me out.

Secreto Bar, Santa Fe: A hidden gem inside a historic icon

Tucked inside the beautifully preserved Hotel St. Francis, Secreto Bar feels like stepping into a more refined, quietly seductive side of Santa Fe.

The hotel itself is a historic boutique gem—timeless, intimate, and deeply rooted in the spirit of the city.

Had I not been staying at Hotel Santa Fe, the only Native American–owned hotel in town, this is exactly where I would have checked in.

But even if you’re not staying here, Secreto is reason enough to walk through those doors.

Garden to glass, elevated

Secreto doesn’t just serve cocktails—they craft experiences.

Their philosophy is “garden to glass,” and it shows in every detail: fresh herbs, layered flavors, and unexpected combinations that feel both inventive and grounded in the landscape.

The bartenders are world-class—not just technically skilled, but genuinely passionate.

My bartender, Hector, embodied that perfect balance of expertise and warmth, guiding me through the menu with the kind of enthusiasm you can’t fake.

And then, of course, there’s the drink.

The smoked sage margarita

The signature smoked sage margarita arrives with presence—mezquite salt rim, a subtle aromatic haze, and that first sip that stops you mid-thought.

It’s smoky, yes, but beautifully so. Not overpowering, not gimmicky. Just deeply, perfectly layered. Easily one of the top three margaritas I’ve ever had in my life.

Now, I’ll admit—I love a smoky drink. But I was curious. I asked Hector whether less adventurous drinkers ever send it back, overwhelmed by the intensity.

To my surprise, he laughed. Apparently, it’s the opposite. Some guests ask for it to be made with mezcal instead of tequila—to make it even smokier.

I should have thought of that myself. Looks like I’ll have to come back.

A craft drink menu worth returning for

As tempting as it was to order a second round, the rest of the cocktail menu was calling my name. Each drink reads like poetry.

There’s the Secret Garden—a basil gin gimlet with chamomile honey. The Chorus of Crows—a black walnut bourbon sour.

And the Georgia O’Keeffe–inspired Ghost Ranch Reverie—tequila layered with peach, apricot shrub, and smoked rosemary.

It’s the kind of menu that makes you wish you had a few more nights in town. Or at least a higher tolerance.

Don’t skip the bubbles – Gruet Tasting Room

Just steps away, the hotel also houses the Gruet Tasting Room—and it’s not to be missed.

Gruet’s sparkling wines, produced right here in New Mexico, are exceptional. Crisp, elegant, and surprisingly refined, they easily hold their own against more traditional champagne houses.

Even the most devoted champagne aficionados will be impressed.

A new drinking philosophy

I don’t drink much these days. But when I do, I want it to be intentional. Thoughtful. Worth it.

Secreto helped me put that feeling into words: garden to glass. Consider it my new motto.

Cheers to sage-infused everything.
